On
Saturday, August 2, 2003, a new "Miss Carbon County will be crowned
at the community center at the Carbon County Fairgrounds, at 7 pm by
Amy Watkins, our reigning "Miss Carbon County." Amy will be hosting
the pageant, along with Michael Youso, a local businessman.
Along with
our regular competition a "Woman of Achievement" award will be given
to a local woman. This is done on the state level too, and Carbon County's
"Woman of Achievement" will be competing with the other recipients of
the award in June of 2004, at the "Miss Utah" pageant. Women are nominated
by the young women competing for the title of "Miss Carbon County."
The "Miss Carbon
County Scholarship Pageant" along with the "Miss Utah Scholarship Organization"
and the "Miss America Scholarship Organization" are all non-profit organizations.
On our local level, many volunteer hours have been rendered through
the contestants and winners of our program. Last year alone, Amy Watkins
served hundreds of hours in preparing for "Miss Utah" and in serving
in the capacity of "Miss Carbon County."
The tradition
of pageants and beauty queens is a long running tradition and most women
today would probably admit to fantasizing as a young girl to someday
be able to be "Miss America". Pageants have changed quite a bit since
the inception of "Miss America" in 1938. The service project and platform
issue set this organization apart from the many "for profit" pageants
now being run in many communities. Young women, through their local
pageants, carry out thousands of service projects all over the country.
The Miss Carbon County Scholarship Pageant is a franchise owned by the
"Miss Utah Organization". The "Miss Utah Organization," provides training
for our local director and her committee, and ensures the standards
are kept in accordance with the "Miss America" rules.
