COUNTY FAIR BREAD BAKING CONTEST

Would you like to try your hand at bread making in a bag and have some fun at the same time? Come and join us on August 5 at 9:00 a.m. at the Carbon High School Home Economics kitchen.  Anyone  age 3 and up is welcome to participate.  You don’t have to be a pro, just willing to have a good time.  Your final product will be judged and a $20 first place and $10 second place cash prize awarded in both a Senior and Junior division.  All ingredients and supplies are provided.  If you want to practice ahead of time, see the recipe below.  For more information or to sign up call the USU Extension at 636-3236 or 636-3233.

Bread Recipe

Bread in a Bag
White Bread
Makes 3 Loaves

3 c. Flour
1 package Rapid Rise Yeast
2 t. Sugar
1 t. Salt
1 T. Oil
1 c. Water (125 degrees – 130 degrees Fahrenheit)

In a large plastic bag combine:
1 c. flour, yeast, sugar and water. Close bag and knead working bag with your fingers to blend the ingredients. Let the mixture rest for 10 minutes.

Add to the bag 1 c. of flour, salt and oil. Close bag with the twist tie and work dough until the flour is well blended. Gradually, add small amounts of flour until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bag (approximately 1 cup).

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough in half. Covering one half with plastic wrap take the other half and knead for 5 minutes or until it’s smooth and elastic. If the dough is gooey (sticky is okay), add a very small amount of flour and continue kneading.

Cover the dough with a plastic bag and let it rest for 10 minutes (optional).

Flatten the dough into a rectangle. Starting at the small end, roll dough tightly into a loaf. Pinch the ends together and turn them under. Place seamside down into a greased loaf pan and allow to proof (rise) for 30 minutes.

Bake in a pre-heated oven at 400 degrees for 25 minutes. Remove pan from the oven. Remove bread from the pan and cool on a baking rack.
